WASHINGTON, D.C. – Behind a pair of first collegiate goals, the Marymount men's soccer team earned its first win of the season on Tuesday night, defeating Gallaudet University, 2-0.
Although possession played much into the Saints favor for the first half, it wasn't until the 34th minute that they found the back of the net. With the ball on the right side, freshman Levis Lopez squared up for a pass to the top of the 18-yard box to find the feet of junior Anthony Calderon. Calderon, taking two touches toward the goal, blasted off a shot through traffic and into the right side of the net for his first collegiate goal and the first of the season for the Saints. Lopez earned his first collegiate assist in the process.
It wasn't more than seven minutes later that sophomore Ricky Golden added his first collegiate goal. Corralling the ball at the top of the 18, he slid the ball past one defender and quickly got a kick off that sent the ball toward the right post and into the goal for the 2-0 lead at the half.
The second half saw much more offense on both sides, seeing 22 total shots get off, but the score remained at 2-0 until the final horn.
Sophomore goalkeeper John Valcicak earned his first clean sheet of the year, making five saves in his 90 minutes of play.
The Saints will continue on the road tomorrow night, September 13, heading to Shenandoah University for another non-conference matchup. First touch is slated for 7 p.m.
