Continued Academic Excellence by Marymount student athletes

ARLINGTON, Va. – As we approach another year of Marymount (Va.) University athletics, we'd like to take a moment to recognize the success of our student athletes beyond their sports with the achievement they reach in the classroom.

The Capital Athletic Conference announced on Friday its annual CAC All-Academic team, and another record year for the Saints saw 110 student athletes make their way onto the squad. All but two sports for Marymount compete in the CAC, adding up to 227 of our student-athlete population. This averages out to 48.5 percent of our CAC-competing athletes earning a spot on the All-Academic team, good enough to place us fourth in the league.

To obtain a spot on the team, a student athlete in one or more CAC championship sports must attain a 3.20 grade-point average (GPA) or better for the academic year. As a whole conference, the 2016-17 team consists of a record 1,499 student athletes, beating last year's record year by 113.

The other two teams that are not affiliated with the CAC at Marymount are women's golf and men's volleyball. Women's golf, now officially an associate member of the Centennial Conference, would have had six of its seven members earn a spot on the team.

As for men's volleyball, seven Saints earned their way onto the Continental Volleyball Conference 2017 All-Academic team. Members of this team must have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher to receive the honor.

And finally, the Virginia Sports Information Directors announced their yearly Academic All-State team that consisted of six Saints from six different teams: Junior Javier Herrera of baseball (3.91 GPA), junior Courtney VanWie of women's golf (3.95 GPA), sophomore Brandon Rogers of men's basketball (3.95 GPA), junior Daniel Bothwell of men's lacrosse (3.98), junior Brooke Saunders of women's cross country (3.89 GPA), and junior Kellen Cannon of women's lacrosse (3.97 GPA).

Bothwell and Saunders were named Marymount's Scholar Athletes of the Year, while Rogers and Cannon were both named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team.
