ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount (Va.) University baseball team hosted its first game of the season at Bishop O'Connell High School on Thursday afternoon, falling behind early to No. 9 Randolph-Macon College to drop a 13-6 decision.
The Yellow Jackets jumped ahead early, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning, and six more split between the third and fourth frames.
By the bottom half of the fifth, the Saints broke the scoring drought when sophomore designated hitter Luke Tyree launched a shot over the right-field fence for his first home run of the season.
In the top of the sixth, sophomore Ryan Scheufele took the mound in relief, keeping RMC off home plate with two strikeouts and a ground out. In the bottom half of the frame, MU brought around two more runs off a smacked ball to the fence in left center by junior Hayes Nelson registering a two-RBI double.
The Saints were able to get one more on the scoreboard before the end of the game, seeing Nelson send a sacrifice fly to center field for Coates to tag up and roll home.
Hayes led the way on the offensive side, going 2-for-4 at the plate for three RBIs, while Coates went 2-for-3 for two runs and a RBI.
The men will now head to Winter Haven, Florida for their six-game Spring Break trip. They open up play on Saturday, March 4 with a seven-inning twin bill against Otterbein University. First pitch is slated for 12:45 p.m.
