ARLINGTON, Va. - Marymount baseball junior Nick Smutko went 4-for-7 with a run and two RBIs, but York (Pa.) escaped a bases loaded jam with the go-ahead run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth of game two to complete the sweep in a CAC doubleheader Saturday at Bishop O'Connell High School.
Marymount (12-17, 4-9 CAC) has lost nine games this season by just three runs or less, including four in conference play.
Game 1: York 12, Marymount 7
Senior Collin Bazemore held the Spartans (13-12-1, 6-5 CAC) scoreless through the first three innings as Marymount maintained its three-run lead. However, York plated six runs in the top of the fourth to take three-run lead after a grand slam by Seth Brosius.
The Saints got a run back in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI-single by Darrow that scored Smutko.
Each team added another run in the seventh before York added five more in the ninth, three of which were unearned, to take a 12-5 lead.
Darrow added his second home run of the game in the bottom of the ninth before junior Conner Hall scored on a wild pitch to provide the final margin.
Darrow finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scofred while Tyree went 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI. Smutkow was 2-for-4.
Bazemore suffered his fourth loss in eight starts this season, allowing six runs on nine hits over 6.0 innings and walking three while striking out nine, four shy of his season high against No. 9 Frostburg State on March 23.
Game 2: York 15, Marymount 12
Both teams scored early and often in the nightcap with the Spartans taking a 7-1 lead after three. Marymount scored its first run on an RBI ground out by Darrow in the bottom of the first.
York added another run in the top of the fourth to go ahead 8-1 before the Saints scored two in the fourth and one one in the fifth to cut the Spartan lead in half.
York added three more runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to push its advantage to 14-4. However, Marymount began its comeback with four runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Freshman Casey Baker opened the scoring with an RBI double that scored Darrow. The final three Saint runs were unearned, beginning with a foul out by Tyree that scored Hall. Baker then stole home before Smutko tripled to score junior Austin Sizemore.
York added its final run in the top of the ninth to take a 15-8 lead.
Marymount sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, scoring four runs on two hits and taking advantage of two Spartan errors. Sizemore started the scoring with a sacrifice fly that scored Baker before Tyree scored on a wild pitch and Smutko and junior Ryan Scheufele both scored on an error.
With two outs and the bases loaded and the go ahead run at the plate, York ended the threat and completed the sweep with a strikeout by Jeff Noss.
Baker finished the game 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs while Smutko also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Hall was 2-for-6 with two runs scored.
Senior Dylan Gerdts lost for just the second time in eight starts this season, allowing seven runs on eight hits, including two home runs, over 3.0 innings. He walked three and struck out two.
Sunday's nine-inning nonconference game against Randolph-Macon was canceled so that Saints return to action next Wednesday when they travel to Salisbury. First pitch is at 3:30 p.m. The Sea Gulls edged Marymount, 7-6, on April 5.
