AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Marymount University baseball team fell in a doubleheader Sunday to Rhode Island College, a part of its Spring Break trip in Florida.
Game 1: Rhode Island 6, Marymount 2
Senior Ryan Scheufele started on the mound for the Saints, having a good first three innings, just giving up one run in the bottom of the second while striking out five.
Marymount responded with a run of its own in the top of the fourth when senior Conner Hall launched a home run over the left-field fence. However, the Anchormen brought around five runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 6-1 lead that would hold the rest of the way.
Scheufele was relieved by junior Justin DiDonato, tossing two innings, not allowing a hit and two strikeouts.
Game 2: Rhode Island 14, Marymount 0
Junior Kenny Sysyn was given the nod for game two, tossing a shutout three innings with four strikeouts before Rhode Island found some offense.
In the fourth and fifth inning, the Anchormen rattled off 14 runs, while their pitching held the Saints scoreless throughout.
Marymount will have a few days off from competition before concluding its trip in Florida with two more nine-inning games on Wednesday and Thursday. They will take on Utica on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m., at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven.
