Men's lacrosse falls at home to Eagles in non-conference matchup

ARLINGTON, Va. – A close battle for the Marymount (Va.) University men's lacrosse team against Bridgewater (Va.) College on Saturday fell to the Eagles, dropping a 12-10 decision at Long Bridge Park.

It was a tight contest from the start, seeing the score stay even at three goals apiece through the first 15 minutes. The Eagles opened up with two-straight finishes, but the Saints rallied for a three-goal run to take a 3-2 lead with 36 seconds remaining until the first break. In the stretch, freshman Michael Posey notched his second career goal junior Dylan Watkins and sophomore Dylan Handel followed behind with two unassisted finishes.

Just before the horn, Bridgewater tacked on another to draw the score even heading into the second period.

Again, the Eagles opened up the second quarter with two goals. But in similar fashion, Marymount came back with two of its own off finishes by senior Kellen McCarthy and another by Watkins. However, Bridgewater found the back of the net at the 2:20 mark to take a 6-5 advantage into the half.

In the third quarter, the Saints fell behind after three goals by the Eagles pushed their lead to 9-5. At the 2:09 mark and a man-up opportunity, sophomore Josh McIvor found junior Nathan Beard on a slash down the right side for a left-side finish to cut the deficit.

In the closing minute of the period, Bridgewater added another to push the lead back to four before Watkins completed his hat trick with a goal with 10 seconds remaining on the clock.

The momentum carried over into the final 15 minutes of the game, with McCarthy finding Beard on a man-up chance to get the Saints back within two. Bridgewater, though, found the back of the net two more times to seal up the game.

In the closing three minutes, the Saints got two more goals from the sticks of sophomore Sean Friedman and McIvor to end the game at 12-10.

The Saints continue their home stand on Wednesday, March 1, hosting Catholic University for another non-conference tilt. Start time is slated for 7 p.m., at Long Bridge Park.
