Wiechecki, Safley Post Double Doubles in 3-1 Road Win at Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Marymount men's volleyball senior TJ Wiechecki and sophomore Sam Safley each posted double doubles as the No. 14 Saints posted a 25-17, 25-20, 20-25, 25-19 victory over Wittenberg Wednesday night at Pam Evans Smith Arena.

Marymount (2-0) posted a .260 hitting percentage, including .429 in the deciding fourth set where the team had 15 kills.

Wiechecki totaled 19 kills and 11 digs, posting the 10th double double of his career and second in his last three matches. He hit .263 and had two block assists. Safely registered his first double double in 24 career matches, totaling 14 kills and 12 digs while hitting .375 with four total blocks.

The duo combined to hit .314 while accounting for 65 percent of the team's kills and 38 percent of its digs.

With the Tigers (1-1) holding a 10-9 lead in the first, the Saints took a commanding 22-13 lead following a 12-4 run during which Wiechecki had a kill and two services while Safley and junior Remington Shahan each had two kills.

The second set featured 12 tied and five lead changes, the last coming at 20-19 after a kill by Safley sparked a 6-1 run to put Marymount ahead two sets to none. The Saints scored twice on service aces by freshman Tommy Garcia before totaling two of the final three points on kills by Safley and Wiechecki, respectively.

With the third set tied at 14-14, Wittenberg scored six of the next eight points to take a 20-16 lead. The Tigers scored seven of their final eight points on Marymount errors.

The Saints jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the fourth set and stretched their advantage to as many as seven en route to the match-clinching victory.

Shahan finished with six kills and four total blocks while senior Erich Bratke had 44 assists and senior Connor Choate totaled 19 digs.

Marymount travels to Kenosha, Wisconsin on Friday for contests with Concordia (Wisc.) and No. 9 Carthage. The Saints went 4-7 against nationally ranked teams a year ago. Live stats and video of both matches will be available on
