Safley Leads No. 6 Saints in Sweep Over Ramapo at Cairn in Road Finale

LANGHORNE, Pa. - Marymount men's volleyball sophomore Sam Safley totaled a team-high 18 kills to go along with a .483 hitting percentage as the sixth-ranked Saints won their third-straight match with a 25-22, 25-18, 25-22 sweep of Ramapo Tuesday night inside the Mason Activity Center on the campus of Cairn University.

Marymount (18-6, 9-2 CVC) totaled 41 kills in its final regular season road contest of the 2018 season.

Over his last two matches, Safley has totaled 40 kills over eight sets for an average of five kills per set. He also added seven digs.

Senior TJ Wiechecki added 10 kills and is approaching 1,400 for his career with 1,382. He is also just 17 attempts away from 3,000. He also has 506 career digs.

The Roadrunners (6-16, 3-7 CVC) jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set before extending it to 10-5. Five-straight points by the Saints tied the set at 10-10. The set featured eight ties, the last coming at 19-19 before Marymount scored six of the final nine points, including four on Ramapo errors, to take the first set.

The Saints jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set and never trailed, using a 7-2 run midway through to take a 16-9 advantage. Marymount scored four points off Roadrunner errors and two off kills by Safley. Ramapo scored four consecutive points to pull within three, 16-13, before the Saints scored five of the final six points, two on kills by Safley and two on Roadrunner errors.

The third set featured four ties with neither team able to take a lead larger than three. A Ramapo error and kill by Safley put Marymount in front 23-20 before back-to-back points by Ramapo pull the team back within one. The Saints would then seal their 13th win of the season in straight sets on a kill by Safley and a service ace by junior Remington Shahan.

Shahan finished with eight kills, two service aces, two digs and two block assists while senior Connor Choate had a team-high nine digs. Senior Carson Caudell added seven digs, one shy of his season high.

Marymount concludes the regular season with three-straight home matches beginning on Friday against Rutgers-Newark at 7 p.m.
