ARLINGTON, Va. – Friday afternoon, Eastern Mennonite University traveled to the home of the Marymount University women's soccer team, stealing a 1-0 victory in the season opener at Long Bridge Park.
Eastern Mennonite earned its first real opportunity at goal early in the half, but junior Gabby Cabrales thought otherwise, making a goal-line save.
The Royals took the early edge right after a highlight save from Cabrales. In the eighth minute, Rachel Sauder found the back of the net after the Cabrales' deflection rebounded into the six-yard box.
The second half would look a little different for the Saints, playing a majority of the half on their offensive side of the field, tallying a total of five shots. In the 51st minute, Cabrales made the stadium gasp again as her header hit the cross bar from a corner kick by junior Jennifer McKee.
Senior Sydney Schultz, returning after a year away with injury, tended the net for the full 90 minute, turning away three Royal opportunities.
Marymount will play again on Saturday, September 1, as they take on Chatham University from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Kickoff will start at 4:00 PM at Long Bridge Park.
