LANCASTER, Pa. – The Marymount University women's volleyball team swept the Atlantic East Conference weekly awards on Monday, with junior Mykael Johnson named the Player of the Week, and senior Theresa Buscemi named the Specialty Player of the Week.
Johnson and Buscemi led the team to a 4-0 week, including winning the tournament championship in Marymount's Sets 4 Vets tournament over the weekend. The team went 3-0 in the tournament. The team only dropped one set all week.
Johnson posted double-digit kills in three of the Saints' matches last week, with a high of 16 in a 3-0 sweep of Franklin & Marshall College on Friday. She added 13 digs against the Diplomats for her fourth double-double of the season.
She added 13 kills in a 3-0 sweep over Gettysburg College and 12 kills against Meredith College, in a 3-1 win.
In total, Johnson finished the week with 50 kills, 33 digs, six service aces and five blocks to earn her first Player of the Week award.
Buscemi led the defense against Meredith, with 26 digs, to clinch the tournament championship in Saturday.
She finished the week with 53 digs, including 12 against Franklin & Marshall and 10 against Gettysburg.
Buscemi also added three aces in a 3-0 sweep of Emory & Henry College and two against Meredith. For her efforts in the weekend tournament, she was named to the All-Tournament team.
The honor marks the second for Buscemi as the Atlantic East Defensive Player of the Week.
The Saints will be back in action on Wednesday, September 25 at the University of Mary Washington; the match is set for 7 p.m.
