SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Marymount University women's volleyball team traveled to Swarthmore College on Friday night, picking up a 3-0 sweep of the Garnet, to begin a weekend quad-match.
Junior Michaella Ulses put down a kill to start the match, as the Saints opened on a 7-3 run.
Marymount continued to hold the lead, with three kills from sophomore Caylee Shelton, while two of Johnson's kills pushed the advantage to 17-9.
Swarthmore fought back to cut the Saints' lead to 21-19, but kills from Shelton and Johnson kept the Saints ahead, before senior Theresa Buscemi capped the set with a service ace.
The Garnet took a 4-1 lead to start the second set, but an 11-2 run for the Saints flipped the lead.
Johnson tallied three kills and an ace, while Munsterman added two kills and an ace to help the team to a 12-6 edge.
Swarthmore cut the lead down to three, 15-12, but Marymount would not give up its advantage, holding on for the 2-0 match lead.
Marymount's momentum carried into the final set with a 13-2 run to open play. Johnson notched four kills, while Buscemi added two aces.
The Saints pushed the lead to 20-12, but Swarthmore again fought back to cut the deficit to 23-19.
However, the final two points went to Marymount, as junior Myah Cordrey tallied a kill to cap the match.
Buscemi led the defense with 19 kills, while junior Maggie Viniard tallied a double-double with 36 assists and 12 digs. Shelton added nine kills to the offensive attack.
The Saints will continue the weekend against the University of Scranton on Saturday, October 12, beginning at 12 p.m.
